明治期の文学者、夏目漱石の中編小説。初出は「ホトトギス」［1906（明治39）年4月。親譲りの無鉄砲で江戸っ子気質の主人公「坊っちやん」が四国の中学校に数学教師として赴任し、わんぱくな生徒たちのいたずらにあったり、教頭の「赤シャツ」一派と数学教師「山嵐」との内紛に巻き込まれ、正義感に駆られて活躍するが、最後には辞表を出してただ一人の理解者のばあやの清の待つ東京に戻る。漱石は1895（明治28）年から翌年にかけて、松山中学の英語教師だった。その体験が元になっていると言われる。歯切れのいい文章と「坊っちやん」の個性の魅力によって、多くの人に愛読されている作品の一つである。
